Card Decline Issue

There is an ongoing issue at some Gas pumps and merchant locations as a result of a software update on their point-of-sale (POS) devices. This is resulting in new debit & credit cards issued in the last 18 months being declined when using Chip & Pin functionality. Larger merchant locations with VeriFone POS are working through remote fixes, with smaller merchants to follow. A fix has been identified for by Gas Pump POS providers and plans are being put in place to encourage retail locations to update their software. A full resolution will take time.

(Please note, this issue was fully resolved at Costco and Loblaws on January 23, 2020.)

Experienced a Declined Transaction?

If you experience a decline and are told that there is an issue with your card by the merchant, please rest assured that this is not a card issue. We’d appreciate if you could call us on 1.844.685.6225 if this occurs so that we can directly work with the merchant involved.

 

How To Complete Declined Transactions

  • Use your Membercard Flash (Tap) functionality for transactions under $100, or split your transaction in two to allow for larger contactless transactions.

  • Enable and use your Mobile Wallet on your Mobile Phone for Samsung PayApple Pay or Google Pay.

  • Use your card as normal at the ATM to have cash on hand. Use the Ding Free app to find your nearest free-to-use ATM. (Not advised at this time due to COVID-19)
